In the paper under review, the authors prove the existence of log-canonical models of pairs \((X,\Delta )\). More precisely, if \((X,\Delta =\sum a_i \Delta _i)\) is a pair consisting of a normal variety \(X\) and a \(\mathbb Q\)-divisor \(\Delta\) such that \(0\leq a_i\leq 1\) and \(K_X+\Delta\) is \(\mathbb Q\)-Cartier, then there exists a birational projective morphism \(f:Y\to X\) such that if \(\Delta _Y\) is the strict transform of \(\Delta\) plus the reduced exceptional divisor, then \((Y,\Delta _Y)\) is log canonical and \(K_Y+\Delta _Y\) is ample over \(X\). As an application, the authors improve a result from [Ann. Math. (2) 177, No. 2, 645--661 (2013; Zbl 1271.14067)] showing that \(K\)-semistable polarized varieties have only semi-log-canonical singularities.
