The author shows that the Lefschetz standard conjecture implies a consequence of the general Hodge conjecture. Consider a smooth complex projective variety \(X\) of dimension \(n\). A cohomology class \(\gamma \in H^{2i} (X, {\mathbb Q})(i)\) is called \textit{big} if it is the sum of an ample divisor and an effective algebraic cycle. Cup product with a big cohomology class in \(H^{2n-2k}(X, {\mathbb Q})\) gives a morphism of Hodge structures \(H^k(X, {\mathbb Q}) \to H^{2n-k}(X, {\mathbb Q})\) for \(0 \leq k \leq n\). The kernel \(L\) of this morphism is seen to be of Hodge coniveau at least \(1\). Thus the general Hodge conjecture predicts that \(L\) should be supported on a divisor. The main theorem of the paper states that \(L\) is supported on a divisor if the Lefschetz standard conjecture is true. Moreover, if \(k \leq 5\), then \(L\) is supported on a divisor unconditionally.
