The purpose of this article is to study the geometry of closed differential forms of arbitrary degree, with particular emphasis on new techniques that are available in the presence of symmetry. An important application of this theory is the construction of multi-moment maps with values in a finite-dimensional vector space. The case of closed four-forms is studied in detail using an algebraic condition on Lie groups that guarantees the existence and uniqueness of multi-moment maps for four-form geometries.
