Let \(K\) be a finite extension of a characteristic zero field \(F\). A square matrix \(A\) over \(F\) is said to represent \(K\) if there exists a polynomial \(q\in F[X]\) which divides the minimal polynomial of \(A\) over \(F\) and an isomorphism of \(F\)-algebras between \(K\) and the quotient of the smallest subalgebra of \(M_n(F)\) containing \(A\) by the ideal generated by \(q(A)\). Using, e.g., properties of Ramanujan sums and the adjacency matrix of cyclic graphs, the authors obtain various results on representations of subfields of the field of complex numbers by circulant matrices.
