A ceramic/metal functionally graded circular plate is investigated under one-term and two-term transversal excitations in thermal environment. Using the principle of virtual work, the nonlinear driving equations for the plate are derived. In a particular plate clamping regime the forced Duffing vibration has been identified by means of the Galerkin method. The critical conditions for the homoclinic orbits are studied using the Melnikov method. Conditions for the existence of periodic and multiply periodic solutions and a transition to chaos were set and validated through numerically assisted phase portrait analysis. That includes bifurcation diagrams and an identificaton of maximum Lyapunov exponents.
