To each finitely generated torsion free nilpotent group \(\Gamma\), we may associate a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group \(G_\Gamma\). The author considers the class of all finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups such that \(G_\Gamma\) is totally unimodular. A group in this class is called TUF-group. The author studies the non-zero Euler characteristic of TUF-groups, the properties of the class of TUF-groups and the property of having finite index here. One of the main results generalises a theorem of \textit{I. Belegradek} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 35, No. 6, 805-811 (2003; Zbl 1042.20022)]. Finally, the notion of compressibility is connected with that of TUF-group.
