    The authors establish the existence of solutions to Kirchhoff boundary value problems: \[ -(1+ \gamma G'(\|u\|^2))\Delta u = F'(u) +h(x)\quad \text{in}\quad \Omega, \qquad u= 0 \quad \text{on}\quad \partial\Omega, \] where \(G\) is \(C^1\) and \(h \in L^2(\Omega)\). They first consider the case where \(F\) is \(C^1\) and, roughly, \(|F(u)|\sim |u|^p\) and \(G(\|u\|^2)\sim \|u\|^{2q}\) with \(1 \leq p < 2^*\) and \(1\leq q\). Then, they consider the nonsmooth case, where \(F\) is continuous, \(F'\) has an upward jump discontinuity and \(2q > p\).
