The authors consider icosahedral tilings, i.e. a class of tilings of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space analogous to the Penrose tiling in 2 dimensions, where all edge vectors are vertex vectors of a regular icosahedron. The construction is done by projecting a subset of \(\mathbb{Z}^6\subseteq \mathbb{R}^6\) onto a 3-dimensional affine subspace. It turns out that the tiling admits a deflation, i.e. a canonical subdivision by similar tilings. This subdivision is described by a local construction rule, independent of the actual position. The arguments are based on geometric considerations and are illustrated by various figures.
