The book under review written by two experts in approximation by positive linear operators (PLO, shortly), consists in eight chapters and contains most of the recent results in the topics announced by the contents of the book, very many belonging to the authors. The results can be divided into three groups, as follows : results on linear combinations of positive linear operators (including direct uniform and pointwise results, inverse and saturation results and Voronovskaja-type results), new quantitative estimates in Voronovskaja type results for general PLO, and quantitative estimates in direct approximation and in Voronovskaja type results for various hybrids of PLO. More in detail, Chapter 1 titled ''Moments and combinations of positive linear operators'', surveys the results on the calculations and estimations of the moments for many discretely defined PLO, for their Kantorovich variants and their Durrmeyer variants, for Phillips, Szász-Mirakjan-Baskakov and Szász-Mirakjan-Laguerre operators. Chapter 2 deals with direct uniform approximation results for linear combinations of Post-Widder operators, of Durmeyyer type operators, of Phillips operators and of Szász-Mirakjan-Baskakov operators. Chapter 3 presents inverse and saturation type results for linear combination of Durrmeyer operators, of Phillips operators, of Bernstein operators and of Bernstein-Kantorovich operators. Chapter 4 deals with recent improvements of the Voronovskaja type results for Bernstein operators, asymptotic expansions for some PLO, Voronovskaja type results for Schoenberg operators and for linear combinations of Phillips operators and Durrmeyer modification operators. Chapter 5 contains pointwise estimates in approximation by linear combinations of Bernstein polynomials, of Szász-Mirakjan-Durrmeyer operators, of Bernstein-Kantorovich operators and of Phillips operators. The chapter ends with approximation results for linear combinations of complex Phillips operators attached to analytic functions. Chapter 6 treats Voronovskaja type results in terms of weighted moduli of smoothness for Szász-Mirakjan operators, for Baskakov operators, for Phillips operators, for Lupas-Szász operators, for derivatives of Szász-Mirakjan operators and for linear combinations of other various PLO. Chapter 7 deals with direct local and global estimates in approximation by various hybrid type operators, including the Lupas-Durrmeyer operators, the modified Baskakov-Durrmeyer operators, the Jain-Szász-Mirakjan-Durrmeyer operators, the Baskakov-Jain operators, the Baskakov-Szász operators based on the inverse Pólya-Eggenberger distributions and the Lupas integral operators based on beta function. The last Chapter 8, considers quantitative results in approximation by Paltanea type operators which depend continuously on a real parameter, representing links between various PLO. The cases of Durrmeyer type operators, of modified Phillips operators, of general Lupas type operators, of modified Baskakov-Szász operators, of Jakimoski-Leviatan-Paltanea operators are included. This book will be of interest to researchers working in approximation theory and for courses in approximation theory for graduate students.
