By Heyde's theorem (see [\textit{G. Feldman}, Functional equations and characterization problems on locally compact abelian groups. Zürich: European Mathematical Society (2008; Zbl 1156.60003)]), a Gaussian distribution on \(\mathbb R\) is characterized by the symmetry of the conditional distribution of one linear form in \(n\) independent random variables given another. For \(n=2\), the author proves analogue results of this theorem for random variables with values in a locally compact abelian group \(X\). The coefficients of linear forms are automorphisms of \(X\). He considers separately the cases where \(X\) contains no nonzero compact elements or only a finite subgroup of all compact elements and no elements of order 2. When the assumption regarding compact elements is not made, a characterization result is obtained under additional assumptions about the random variables and the coefficients.
