The main goal of the paper is to present novel geometric numerical integrators for the Hunter-Saxton equation and for its generalizations. The first proposed numerical scheme is based on a new multi-symplectic formulation of the problem and is thus specially designed to preserve the multi-symplectic structure of the original equations. The second scheme is based on Hamiltonian-preserving discretizations and is energy-preserving by construction. The validity of the proposed schemes is illustrated with some numerical examples. This paper is focused on a typical non-smooth exact solution of the Hunter-Saxton equation. The correct treatment of boundary conditions is explained and justified.
