In this paper a space \(X\) is said to be \textit{star-Lindelöf} if for any open cover \(\mathcal U\) of \(X\) there is a countable set \(C\subseteq X\) such that \(St(C,\mathcal U)=X\); \(X\) is \textit{absolutely star-Lindelöf} if for any open cover \(\mathcal U\) of \(X\) and any dense subset \(D\subseteq X\), there is a countable set \(C\subseteq D\) such that \(St(C,\mathcal U)=X\); a space is \textit{selectively absolutely star-Lindelöf} if for any open cover \(\mathcal U\) of \(X\) and any sequence \(\{D_n:n\in\omega\}\) of dense subsets of \(X\) there are finite sets \(F_n\subseteq D_n\) for each \(n\in\omega\), such that \(St(\bigcup\{F_n:n\in\omega\},\mathcal U)=X\). Spaces with the first of the properties defined above have been studied by many authors under a confusing variety of names but are now generally called \textit{star countable spaces} while the term \textit{star Lindelöf} is now applied to a slightly weaker property. This paper studies the relationships between the above-mentioned classes of spaces; among the results it is shown that while there exists a Tychonoff absolutely star-Lindelöf space of cardinality \(\mathfrak d\) which is not selectively absolutely star-Lindelöf, any absolutely star-Lindelöf space of cardinality less than \(\mathfrak d\) is selectively absolutely star-Lindelöf. Preservation of these properties under the taking of sums, products and continuous images is also considered.
