    Let \(\mathbb{F}\) be a field, \(\Sigma_{n}\) be the set of all \(n\times n\) symmetric matrices over \(\mathbb{F}\), and \(\Sigma_{n}^{0}\) be the singular symmetric matrices. For each irreducible character \(\chi\) of the symmetric group \(S_{n}\) and \(n\times n\) matrix \(A=\left[ a_{ij}\right] \) the immanant \(d_{\chi}(A):=\sum\chi(\sigma)\prod_{i}a_{i,\sigma(i)}\) where the sum is over all \(\sigma\in S_{n}\). The determinant and permanant are special cases of immanants. Let \(\chi\) and \(\lambda\) be irreducible characters of \(S_{n}\) such that \(\lambda\) is not \(0\) on the class of \(3\)-cycles, and let \(\Phi\) be a function of \(\Sigma_{n}\) into itself. The main theorem of this paper shows: if \(n\geq3\) and \(d_{\chi}(\Phi(A)+\alpha\Phi(B))=d_{\lambda}(A+\alpha B)\) for all \(A,B\in\Sigma_{n}^{0}\) and scalars \(\alpha\), then \(\Phi\) must be a bijective linear transformation. One simple consequence is that when \(n\geq3\) there is no function \(\Phi\) of \(\Sigma_{n}\) into itself such that \(\mathrm{per} (\Phi(A)+\alpha\Phi(B))=\det(A+\alpha B)\) for all \(A,B \in \Sigma_n^0\) and scalar \(\alpha\) (there is such a function for \(n=2\)).
