The paper is devoted to the investigation of equicontinuous actions of semisimple (and, more generally, quasi-semisimple) groups on uniform spaces. The main objects are semisimple Lie groups over local fields. Basic notions and the necessary background are given. Groups satisfying the property that every injective image in a topological group is closed are called ``absolutely closed''. Also the notions of universally closed maps and group actions are defined. It is proved that any equicontinuous action is universally closed, and, in particular, is proper. Various applications -- about the closedness of homomorphisms, invariant measurable metrics, metric ergodicity, monoid compactifications, WAP representation and others -- are proved.
