The problem of best \(L_1\) approximation of Heaviside-type functions from Chebyshev and weak-Chebyshev spaces is studied. If the function \(f \in C^0([a,b]\backslash\{\delta\})\) and if the limits of the function \(|f|\) on both sides of \(\delta\) exist and are finite it is said that \(f\) is a Heaviside-type function on \([a,b]\) with jump at \(\delta\in (a,b)\). One and two-sided \(L_1\) approximations deal with specific spaces investigated by many authors. A more general framework for best two-sided \(L_1\) approximations of Heaviside-type functions from Chebyshev spaces is proposed in this paper. Sufficient conditions on the Chebyshev space to obtain a unique \(L_1\) best approximation for every Heaviside-type function are given. This result is applied to polynomial approximation. The problem of best \(L_1\) approximation of Heaviside-type functions from weak-Chebyshev space is studied too. This theory is applied to Hermite polynomial splines.
