The present paper deals with two problems regarding vanishing patterns in the Betti table of edge ideals: Problem 1: Is the Betti diagram of any monomial ideal \(I\) generated in degree \(2\) for any \(j\geq2\), \(j\)-strand connected? That is, if \(j\geq 2\), \(\beta_{i,j}(I)\) and \(\beta_{i+k,j+k}(I)\) are both nonzero where \(k>0\) snd \(i\geq 0\) then \(\beta_{i+m,j+m}(I)\neq0\) for all \(0\leq m\leq k\)? Problem 2: Let \(I\) be a monomial ideal and \(t_i=t_i(S/I):=\max(j:\beta_{i,j}(S/I))\neq 0\) the maximal shifts in its minimal free resolution. Under which conditions and for which values of \(a\) and \(b\) does the subadditivity relation \(t_{a+b}\leq t_a+t_b\) hold? The authors prove in Theorem 1.2 that the answer to Problem 1 is ``yes'' for \(j=3\) and ``no'' for every \(j>3\) (note that the answer for the case \(j=2\) is also known to be ``yes''). With respect to Problem 2, the authors show in Theorem 1.3 that if \(I\) is an edge ideal then the subadditivity property holds for \(b=1,2,3\) and every natural number \(a\).
