Let \(M\) be an oriented \(4\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold. The complex sectional curvature \(K(\pi )\) of a \(2\)-dimensional subspace \(\pi\) of the complexified tangent space \(T_p M \oplus \mathbb C\) is defined by \(K(\pi )=\langle \mathcal{R}(u \wedge v), \bar{v} \wedge u \rangle \), where \(\{u, v\}\) is any unitary basis of \(\pi \), \(\langle , \rangle \) is a Hermitian inner product and \(\mathcal{R}: \Lambda ^2 T_p M \to \Lambda ^2 T_p M\) is the curvature operator of \(M\) induced by the tensor curvature. One says that \(M\) has nonpositive isotropic curvature if \(K(\pi ) \leq 0\) for every isotropic \(2\)-dimensional subspaces \(\pi \). In this paper the authors consider compact oriented Einstein \(4\)-manifolds with negative Ricci curvature and nonpositive isotropic curvature. They give estimates from above for the Euler characteristic in terms of signature, of Ricci curvature and volume of \(M\). Moreover, they give necessary and sufficient conditions for the manifolds \(M\) in the case that these upper bounds are achieved.
