The author studies the higher dimensional version of a question about surface diffeomorphism groups with the discrete topology, posed by \textit{S. Morita} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 74, 329--354 (2006; Zbl 1304.57030)]. The higher dimensional analogue of Morita's problem is about homology of diffeomorphism groups of the \(2n\)-dimensional manifold with boundary, \[ W_{g,k} = (\#_g S^n \times S^n)\setminus \coprod_1^k \mathrm{int}(D^{2n}), \] obtained from the \(g\)-fold connected sum \(\#_g S^n \times S^n\) by cutting out the interior of \(k\) disjoint disks. The author proves as one of his main theorems, that for \(n > 2\), the homology groups of the classifying space for the discrete group of smooth diffeomorphisms of \(W_{g,1}\), whose supports are away from the boundary of \(W_{g,1}\), is independent of \(g\) for homology groups in the range \(i < (g - 2)/2\).
