The authors consider the problem of acoustic wave scattering by an impenetrable obstacle in two dimensions which is formulated as a boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation with a transparent boundary condition. They derive an a posteriori error estimate for the finite element method with the truncated Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) boundary operator, and propose an adaptive finite element algorithm where the truncation parameter is determined through the truncation error and the mesh elements for local refinements are marked through the finite element discretization error. Numerical methods show that the proposed method is competitive with the adaptive PML (perfectly matched layer) method. The authors expect this to be a viable alternative to the adaptive finite element method with PML for solving the same problem.
