Let \(E\) and \(F\) be (infinite-dimensional) Banach spaces and let \(L(E,F)\) denote the space of linear operators from \(E\) to \(F\). \(L_K(E,F)\) denotes the closed subspace of all compact operators. Recently, \textit{S. Dineen} and \textit{J. Mujica} [Czech. Math. J. 65, No. 2, 367--374 (2015; Zbl 1349.46046)] showed that, if \(1 < p \leq q < \infty\), then \(L(\ell_p,\ell_q)\) fails the approximation property. \textit{A. Szankowski} [Acta Math. 147, 89--108 (1981; Zbl 0486.46012)] showed that \(L(\ell_2,\ell_2)\) fails the the approximation property, and subsequently \textit{G. Godefroy} and \textit{P. D. Saphar} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 105, No. 1, 70--75 (1989; Zbl 0674.46009)] showed that the Calkin algebra \(L(\ell_2,\ell_2)/L_K(\ell_2,\ell_2)\) must also fail the approximation property. The author proves a result on complemented subspaces and uses it to full effect to show, among other results, that if \(1 < p \leq q < \infty\), and either (1) \(E\) and \(F\) contain complemented subspaces isomorphic to \(\ell_p\) and \(\ell_q\), respectively, or (2) \(E\) and \(F\) are subspaces of \(\ell_p\) and \(\ell_q\), respectively, then \(L(E,F)\) fails the approximation property. It is also shown that \(L(\ell_p,\ell_q)/L_K(\ell_p,\ell_q)\) fails the approximation property. Similar results for spaces of homogeneous polynomials on Banach spaces are also given.
