The authors show that every representative function of a maximally monotone operator is the Fitzpatrick transform of a bifunction attached to the operator. A~deeper connection of the representative functions of maximally monotone operators to the saddle functions initially introduced by \textit{T. Rockafellar} [in: Differential games and related topics. Proceedings of the International Summer School held in Varenna 1970. Amsterdam: North-Holland. 109--127 (1971; Zbl 0242.90044)] and considered also by \textit{E. Krauss} [Rev. Roum. Math. Pures Appl. 30, 823--836 (1985; Zbl 0598.47059); Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 9, 1381--1399 (1985; Zbl 0619.47042)] is revealed, too, in the sense that, given such a representative function, there is a family of saddle functions having it as Fitzpatrick transform.
