In the first half of the nineteens century, \textit{M. Chasles} [Darboux Bull. 9, 97--98 (1877; JFM 07.0021.01)] gave a construction which determines the axes of an ellipsoid from a pair of conjugate diameters. In the paper under review, Chasles's construction is discussed.
