    The authors consider a blow-up problem from quantum hydrodynamics. The initial-boundary value problem is posed in three-dimensions outside the unit ball, \[ \begin{gathered} \rho_t+\operatorname{div}(\rho\mathbf{u})=0, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^3, \quad |x|>1,\ t>0 \\ (\rho\mathbf{u})_t+\operatorname{div}(\rho\mathbf{u}\otimes \mathbf{u})+\nabla P(\rho)=\frac{\varepsilon^2}{2}\rho\nabla\left(\frac{\Delta\sqrt{\rho}}{\sqrt{\rho}}\right), \\ \rho(x,0)=\rho_0(x)>0, \quad \rho_0(x)=\bar\rho, \quad |x|\ge R, \\ \mathbf{u}(x,0)=\mathbf{u}_0(x), \quad \mathbf{u}_0(x)=\bar{\mathbf{u}}(=\mathbf{0}), \quad |x|\ge R, \\ \left. \frac{\partial\rho}{\partial \mathbf{n}}\right|_{|x|=1}, \quad \left.\mathbf{u}\cdot\mathbf{n}\right|_{|x|=1}=0, \end{gathered} \] where \(\bar\rho>0\) and \(R>1\) are given constants, and \(\mathbf{n}\) is the (outward) unit normal vector to the unit sphere. The local existence of smooth solutions for the model problem was established in [\textit{B. Guo} and \textit{G. Wang}, J. Differ. Equations 261, No. 7, 3815--3842 (2016; Zbl 1354.35123)]. The authors show that such smooth solutions will blow up in finite time whenever a certain weighed functional is sufficiently large.
