The present paper is an overview about results giving the sufficient conditions for a topological algebra to be commutative. \par The author starts with results known for Banach algebras. After that, he moves to results known for (real unital or complex non-unital) normed algebras. At last, the case of general topological algebras is considered, involving mainly separated unital complex $Q$-algebras or locally convex $Q$-algebras. As a separate case, topological algebras which are also von Neumann algebras are considered.
