Although a Gorenstein local ring is defined to be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with an irreducible parameter ideal, \textit{D. G. Northcott} and \textit{D. Rees} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 8, 119--127 (1957; Zbl 0077.26001)] showed that a Noetherian local ring \(A\) is Cohen-Macaulay if all the parameter ideals of \(A\) are irreducible. \textit{S. Goto} [J. Algebra 76, 214--225 (1982; Zbl 0482.13010)] gave its another proof by using a new notion of approximately Cohen-Macaulay. In the paper under review, the author characterizes Gorenstein, Cohen-Macaulay and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, which was introduced by \textit{R. P. Stanley} [Combinatorics and commutative algebra. 2nd ed. Basel: Birkhäuser (1996; Zbl 0838.13008)] and is a generalization of approximately Cohen-Macaulay, properties of \(A\) by using the number of irreducible components of parameter ideals of \(A\) and gave another proof of the theorem of Northcott and Rees.
