Let \(X_e\) be Hirzebruch surface and \(C\subset X_e\) a smooth curve, say \(C\in |ah+bf|\) for some positive integers \(a\), \(b\ge ae\). The gonality of \(C\) was described in [\textit{G. Martens}, Arch. Math. 67, No. 4, 349--352 (1996; Zbl 0872.14022)]. Here the author describes (using Reider's method) a range of \(r, d\) such that any \(g^r_d\) on \(C\) is composed with the \(g^1_a\) on \(C\) induced by \(X_e\) or it comes restricting to \(C\) a fixed embedding of \(X_e\) by a system \(|h+nf|\).
