The paper is concerned with optimal control for the equation of the longitudinal vibration of an extensible beam in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\le 3$, with smooth boundary. The author shows the Fréchet differentiability of the solution improving a previous result [the author, ibid. 353, No. 1, 436--448 (2009; Zbl 1170.35020)], where Gâteaux differentiability was proved. He obtains a characterization of the optimal control of the cost function $J(u,v).$ The proof is based on a minimax result (the existence of a saddle point) for this function, leading to the achievement of the minimum of this cost function, even in the worst disturbances of the system.
