Computational homogenization (CH) generates a virtual model of heterogeneous material for computer applications, and gives equivalent effective properties of the heterogeneous material at the macroscopic scale. The exact description of all heterogeneities of the material by computer is not possible today. The presentation of CH starts here from simple linear cases and arrives at more complex problems (multiphysics, nonlinearity, viscoelastic materials). This book contains an overview of the theoretical and numerical tools of CH in solids, using finite elements. The first part of the book (Chapters 2--6) summarizes the existing knowledge of CH for students, at the graduate level, and for engineers. Chapters 7--9 are devoted to more complex problems and can also be used by researchers. The practical implementation of the described CH in simple programs such as Matlab is proposed. The author does not review the analytical methods, but remarks that, at the time when this book was written, CH methods have been extended to an even larger variety of problems.
