Cardinal sequences are used to classify/describe scattered spaces. If \(X\) is a scattered space then \(I_\alpha(X)\) is (recursivley) the set of isolated points of \(X\setminus\bigcup_{\beta<\alpha}I_\beta(X)\). There is a first ordinal, \(\delta\) say, for which \(I_\delta(X)=\emptyset\) (it is called the height of \(X\)). The sequence \(\bigl\langle |I_\alpha(X)|:\alpha<\delta\bigr\rangle\) is the cardinal sequence of \(X\). The authors add to the information known about cardinal sequences of (locally) compact spaces. They prove that, consistently, various prescribed sequences can occur as cardinal sequences of locally compact spaces. E.g., one can make \(2^{\aleph_0}\) equal to any desired regular cardinal \(\lambda\) (at least \(\aleph_2\)) such that for every \(\delta<\omega_3\) every sequence \(\langle\kappa_\alpha:\alpha<\delta\rangle\) with \(\kappa_\alpha\le\lambda\) for all \(\alpha\), and \(\kappa_\alpha=\aleph_0\) whenever \(\operatorname{cf}\alpha=\aleph_2\) is the cardinal sequence of some locally compact space. The same can be done for the concatenation of an \(\alpha\)-sequence of \(\aleph_0\)s and a \(\beta\)-sequence of \(\lambda\)s, where \(\alpha,\beta<\omega_3\) and \(\lambda\) is a prescribed uncountable cardinal.
