The paper under review is a fundamental contribution to the theory of a Riemannian version of Maxwell-Einstein equations on a manifold. In this version, the Maxwell-Einstein geometry is the geometry of a complex manifold \((M, J)\) with Hermitian metric \(g\), which is conformally Kähler metrics and of constant scalar curvature, and its Ricci tensor is \(J\)-invariant. The authors adapt the theory developed for the study of constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics on compact Kähler manifolds [\textit{M. Atiyah} (ed.) and \textit{D. Iagolnitzer} (ed.), Fields Medallists' lectures. Singapore: World Scientific (1997; Zbl 0913.01020); \textit{A. Fujiki}, Sūgaku 42, No. 3, 231--243 (1990; Zbl 0763.32012)]. Although the modifications leading to such analogues are intuitively clear, the proofs need non-trivial changes and complicated calculations. In particular the authors define obstructions for the existence of such Maxwelll-Einstein structures similar to the Futaki invariant and K-polystabilty in the toric cscK case. Using the developed results, in the second part of the paper the authors provide many examples of both existence and non-existence of such structure on various Kähler manifolds and orbifolds. The theory is particularly useful in the toric case, where most of the examples appear. In particular, the authors are able to show that in 4-dimensions the K-polystability is also sufficient for spaces of second Betti number not exceeding 2, as well as uniqueness in some cases. They use a construction adapted from a previous papers by the first author (and collaborators) to give explicit form of the metrics.
