The problem of approximation in $L_p(\mathbb{R})$ spaces with $1\leq p<\infty $ as well as in the space $C(\mathbb{R})$ of uniformly continuous and bounded functions is studied. The approximation is realized by convolution integrals which are generated by an arbitrary generator function with compact support. For the study of the problem posed the generalized moduli of smoothness and generalized $K$-functionals are introduced and investigated. Direct Jackson-type estimates, inverse Bernstein-type estimates and the equivalence of the introduced generalized modules and functionals are proved.
