From the introduction: The spherical maximal operator is a classical object that appears in a variety of contexts in harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, partial differential equation and geometric combinatorics. $L^p$ bounds for the Stein spherical maximal operator in the setting of compactly supported Borel measures, satisfying natural local size assumptions are established. The range of possible $L^p$ exponents is, in general, a bounded open interval where the upper endpoint is closely tied with the local smoothing estimates for Fourier Integral Operators. Some of the results established in this paper have already been used to study a variety of Falconer type problems in geometric measure theory.
