The authors study the central invariants stemming from Poisson pencils by bi-Hamiltonian reductions, as for example for the Drinfeld-Sokolov (DS) case. It is shown that in general one will get a deformation of a Poisson pencil of hydrodynamic type. As in the DS case one finds a set of invariants of the unreduced pencil that, once restricted to the reduced manifold, define a set of functions which are equivalent to Dubrovin-Liu-Zhang central invariants of the reduced pencil. For exact Poisson pencils, the bi-Hamiltonian reduction process preserves the exactness of the pencil, and the central invariants for the DS Poisson pencils are constant. This work is a good application of bi-Hamiltonian reductions. The bi-Hamiltonian structures of a generalized DS hierarchy and of the Camassa-Holm equation are particularly interesting and here investigated in detail.
