The celebrated theorem of Bessaga and Pełczyński states that, if a dual Banach space $X$ contains $c_0$, then it already contains $\ell_\infty$ [\textit{C. Bessaga} and \textit{A. Pełczyński}, Stud. Math. 17, 151--164 (1958; Zbl 0084.09805)]. Rosenthal extended this to $c_0(\Gamma)$ and $\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ for any set $\Gamma$ [\textit{H. P. Rosenthal}, Acta Math. 124, 205--248 (1970; Zbl 0207.42803)]. An early result of Kalton says that, if $X$ is separable and $Y$ is any Banach space, then the space $L(X,Y)$ of bounded operators from $X$ to $Y$ contains $c_0$ if and only if it contains $\ell_\infty$ [\textit{N. J. Kalton}, Math. Ann. 208, 267--278 (1974; Zbl 0266.47038)]. Feder observed that, using the Josefson-Nissenzweig theorem, the assumption of separability of $X$ can be removed [\textit{M. Feder}, Ill. J. Math. 24, 196--205 (1980; Zbl 0411.46009)]. (For further references, the reader may consult the nice introduction in the paper under review.) The stated goal of the authors is to extend Kalton's result to $c_0(\Gamma)$ and $\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ for any set $\Gamma$. One obstacle is that the Josefson-Nissenzweig theorem only talks about sequences. The authors prove that, if $X$ in an infinite-dimensional Banach space, then, for any Banach space $Y$ and any set $\Gamma$, we have that $L(X,Y)$ contains $c_0(\Gamma)$ if and only if $L(X,Y)$ contains $\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ or $Y$ contains $c_0(\Gamma)$. They also show that, if $X$ is ``large enough'' with respect to $\Gamma$, then the ``or'' part of the statement can be dropped. The final section of the paper studies the case where $L(X,Y)$ contains a complemented copy of $c_0(\Gamma)$. Note that the reference to [15] on page 624 should be to [14], and the two references to [14, Proposition 1.2] on page 627 should both point to [15, Proposition 1.2].
