The authors first give a short survey on several generalizations of the classical result that $\mathbb{R}$ can be expressed as the union of a Lebesgue null set and a set of first category. In the main theorem it is proved that for a locally compact $\sigma$-compact Hausdorff topological group $G$ equipped with a ``Vitali system'' and with Haar measure $\mu$ there exists a residual class of functions in $L^1(G)$ with the property that each function in that class gives rise to a decomposition of $G$ into a $\mu^*$-null set and a set of first category.
