If \(E\) is al algebra over a field \(K\), it is called an \textit{evolution algebra} provided it admits a basis \(\{e_i\}\) (called \textit{natural basis}) such that \[e_ie_j=0,\forall i\neq j\] \[e_i^2=\sum_ka_{ik}e_k, \forall i\] In this paper, the authors introduce the notion of \textit{basic ideal} for finite dimensional evolution algebras. In particular, if \(1\leq i\in\mathbb{N}\), an ideal \(I\triangleleft A\) is an \textit{i-basic ideal relative to a natural basis \(B\)} if \(I\) is generated by \(i\) elements of \(B\). Then, they show that every \(n\)-dimensional perfect evolution algebra has a unique maximal basic ideal (except if the dimension of \(I\) is \(n-1\)). As an application, a classification of perfect (i.e., such that \(A^2=A\)) non-simple 4-dimensional evolution algebras over a field of characteristic not 2 and containing roots of order 2, 3 and 7 is given.
