    In the general context of noncommutative matrix geometry, the authors study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $ia_{t}+\Delta a=-\left\vert a\right\vert ^{p-1}a$ for matrix-valued functions $t\mapsto a\left( t\right) \in M_{n}\equiv M_{n}\left( \mathbb{C}\right) $, where the space $M_{n}\left( \mathbb{C}\right) $ of all $n\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{C}$ is normed by the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product $\left\langle a,b\right\rangle :=\mathrm{Tr}\left( a^{\ast}b\right) $ and $\Delta :=-\widehat{\Delta}$ for the Laplacian operator $\widehat{\Delta}:=\sum _{j=1}^{2}\delta_{j}^{\ast}\delta_{j}=\sum_{j=1}^{2}\delta_{j}\delta_{j}$ defined by the derivations $\delta_{1}:=\left[ y,\cdot\right] $ and $\delta_{2}:=-\left[ x,\cdot\right] $ for some fixed Hermitian matrices $x,y$ generating the diagonal matrix $u=\mathrm{diag}\left( 1,q,\dots,q^{n-1} \right) $ and the cyclic shift $v$, i.e. $e^{\frac{2\pi i}{n}x}=u$ and $e^{\frac{2\pi i}{n}y}=v$, where $q\in\mathbb{C}$ with $q^{n}=1$ is a fixed generator of the group of all complex $n$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{C}$. It is shown that the mass $M\left( a\right) :=\frac{1}{2}\left\vert a\right\vert ^{2}$ and the energy $E\left( a\right) :=D\left( a\right) -\frac{1}{p+1}\left\vert a\right\vert ^{p+1}$ where $D\left( a\right) :=\frac{1}{2}\sum_{j=1}^{2}\left\vert \delta_{j}a\right\vert ^{2}$ are preserved along any solution of the above Schrödinger equation, and there exists a unique solution $a\left( t\right) $ over the whole time interval $\left[ 0,\infty\right) $ for any given initial value $a\left( 0\right) $. Regarding ground states, it is proved that for $\mu>0$, there is an element of $\mathrm{N}$ satisfying the Euler-Lagrange equation $-\Delta a+\mu a=\left\vert a\right\vert ^{p-1}a$ and minimizing the function $E_{\mu}:=E+\mu M$ over $\mathrm{N}$, where $\mathrm{N}$ is the set consisting of those nonzero $a\in M_{n}$ with vanishing $I_{\mu}\left( a\right) :=2D\left( a\right) +2\mu M\left( a\right) -\left\vert a\right\vert ^{p+1}=0$. For $\mu=0$, a similar result is derived after a suitable modification.
