The author studies the period map for a class of elliptic surfaces. More precisely, let $C$ be a genus 3 curve admitting an involution $\sigma$ such that the quotient curve is an elliptic curve $E$. Denote with $C^{(2)}$ the symmetric square of $C$. The resolution of singularities $Y$ of the quotient $C^{(2)}/\sigma^{(2)}$ admits an elliptic fibration with nonconstant $j$-invariant, whose base curve is a genus 1 curve. The author shows that the period map for the Hodge structure on $H^2(Y,\mathbb{Z})$ has one dimensional fibers and the general fiber has two irreducible components. This contradicts the main theorem in [\textit{M.-H. Saito}, J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 23, 441--460 (1983; Zbl 0532.14019)].
