Turnpike conditions in infinite dimensional optimal control (Q2420374)

This is an excellent book devoted to the well-known turnpike phenomenon which holds for large classes of variational and optimal control problems. Specifically, the author presents -- in his words -- some ``individual turnpike results and sufficient and necessary conditions for turnpike phenomenon which are of great interest because of their numerous applications in engineering and the economic theory.'' Chapter 1 of the book (Introduction) is a collection of preliminaries (Banach space valued functions; unbounded operators; \(C_0\) semigroups of linear operators; evolution equations; admissible control operators; turnpike property for variational problems), which are needed in the study of turnpike properties of infinite-dimensional optimal control problems. The rest of the book is entirely original, being based on more or less recent results of the author. In Chapters 2, 3, and 4, the author establishes sufficient and necessary conditions for the turnpike phenomenon for discrete-time optimal control problems in metric spaces which are not necessarily compact. The existence of solutions to the corresponding optimal control problems is also studied. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the turnpike phenomenon for continuous-time optimal control problems are also stated in Chapters 5, 6, and 7. Examples and many exercises are included to illustrate the theoretical results. An adequate list of references and an index of notations are added. It is worth pointing out that the book is well organized, with clear proofs and explanations, easy to read. I strongly recommend it to graduate students and researchers interested in the field.
