Contraction is the principle that for all sentences $p$, $q$, the validity of the argument $p$, $p$ entails $q$ implies the validity of the argument $p$ entails $q$. This paper argues that contraction may fail if the states of affairs $p$, $q$ are causally unstable, in a sense explained. The context of discussion is the blocking of the semantic paradoxes by failure of contraction.
