    The main result of the authors is the following irreducibility criterion. Given a field \(K\) and three integers \(r \geq 2\), \(n>m \geq 0\). Set \(f=\sum_{i=0}^m a_i X_r^i\) and \(g=\sum_{i=0}^n b_i X_r^i\), where \(a_0,\dots,a_m,b_0,\dots,b_n \in K[X_1,\dots,X_{r-1}]\). Assume that \(f\) and \(g\) as polynomials in \(X_r\) are relatively prime over \(K(X_1,\dots,X_{r-1})\). Then, for any positive \(k\) relatively prime to \(n\) and any \(p \in K[X_1,\dots,X_{r-1}]\) irreducible over \(K(X_1,\dots,X_{r-1})\) such that \(\deg_{r-1} p\) is greater than \[ n \deg_{r-1} b_n+(n-1) \max_{0 \leq i \leq m} \deg_{r-1} a_i+m(n-1) \max\{0, \max_{0 \leq i \leq n-1} \deg_{r-1} b_i-\deg_{r-1} b_n\} \] the polynomial \(f+p^kg\) is irreducible over the field \(K(X_1,\dots,X_{r-1})\). Some corollaries simplifying this general version of the theorem are also given.
