Let \(G\) be a group acting on a noetherian ring \(R\). This action defines an ideal \(\tau\subset R\). The paper under review investigates some properties of \(R/ \tau\). For example \(p(R,G)\), the difference between the Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions of \(R\) and \(R/ \tau\), extends the notion of pertinency to infinite groups. The study of this numerical invariant divided into two cases \(p(R,G)=1\) and \(p(R,G)>1\). The ring of invariants \(R^G\) is called Cohen-Macaulay with respect to \(\tau\cap R^G\) if all local cohomology modules of \(R^G\) with respect to \(\tau\cap R^G\) are zero except the top one. Also, \(R\) is called \(G\)-Cohen-Macaulay provided all local cohomology modules of \(R\) with respect to \(\tau\) are zero expcept \(p(R,G)\). The main result shows under some conditions that \(R^G\) is Cohen-Macaulay with respect to \(\tau\cap R^G\) provided \(R\) is \(G\)-Cohen-Macaulay. Also, there is an equivalence between the quotient category of \(R^G\)-modules with respect to \(\tau\cap R^G\)-torsion modules and the corresponding quotient category of the skew group ring.
