Recall that a Kähler group is a group which can be realised as fundamental group of a compact Kähler manifold. The aim of this paper is to construct Kähler groups with arbitrary finiteness properties from surjective maps of a direct product of closed Riemann surfaces holomorphically onto an elliptic curve. For each \(r>3\), the author obtains large classes of new examples of Kähler groups that have classifying spaces with finite \((r-1)\)-skeleton but do not have classifying spaces with finitely many \(r\)-cells. Invariants that distinguish several of these groups are described. Such a construction is inspired by examples of \textit{A. Dimca} et al. [J. Reine Angew. Math. 629, 89--105 (2009; Zbl 1170.14017)], but is more general. In fact the construction given in [loc. cit.] is a topological construction and does not lead to an explicit finite presentation. \par This paper is organized as follows. Section 1 is an introduction to the subject. In Section 2 the author proves that the fibres of his maps are connected. In Section 3 he proves an algebraic result which allows him to deduce the finiteness properties of the groups arising from his construction. In Section 4 he explains his general construction which he then applies in Section 5 to realise the algebraically described groups from Section 3 as Kähler groups. In Section 6 the author explains how the question about the existence of isomorphisms between Kähler groups obtained using his construction reduces to a question in linear algebra. In Section 7 he solves this question for maps arising from purely branched coverings and concludes that the groups in Section 5 are not isomorphic to the groups mentioned in [loc. cit.].
