The authors provide instances where even two-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois-group of \(\mathbb{Q}\) are related to Hecke-eigenclasses in the cohomology of \(\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\) with coefficients in a suitably defined vector-space over a field of characteristic different from 2. Usually, one expects to find such a correspondence for odd representations. They start of by carefully describing the infinite-dimensional modules \(\mathfrak{M}\) they want to use which consist of certain functions on certain lattice classes inside a fixed real-quadratic field \(K\), which are parametrized by \(K^2 \smallsetminus K^\times \cdot \mathbb{Q}^2\) modulo some specific subgroup of \(K^\times\). Using branched covers of Bruhat-Tits trees they are able to relate Hecke-operators to combinatorial Laplace-operators and finally can pin down eigenclasses of the Hecke-operators in \(H^1(\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{Z}),\mathfrak{M})\). Under suitable technical conditions, these eigenclasses correspond to even two-dimensional Galois-representations induced from certain characters on the absolute Galois-group of \(K\) in the usual way: for almost all prime numbers \(\ell\) the Hecke-polynomial for the eigenclass coincides with the Euler-factor of the \(L\)-series of the representation.
