The authors present a mathematical model of an optical bistability. Due to the Neumann boundary conditions, the solution is not unique. To overcome this problem, two renormalization rules for the electric field potential are proposed. A conservative finite difference scheme for the discretization of the considered system of nonlinear and nonstationary differential equations is described. For computing the solution of the finite difference scheme, a two-stage iteration process is used. The proposed method is illustrated by numerical examples. A comparison with a finite difference scheme based on a split-step method is also given.
