This very interesting and technical paper is concerning a particular incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in \(\mathbb{R}^3\): the viscosity in the vertical direction is much larger compared with the horizontal viscosity. Moreover, the initial data have a large and slowly varying part. A unique global solution is obtained with these assumptions. A decomposition of the initial data is used and some auxiliary problems are solved to obtain the main result. The main mathematical tools are: the dyadic operators and the Fourier transform, an anisotropic Bernstein type lemma, the classical homogeneous anisotropic Sobolev norm, the anisotropic version of Bony's decomposition for both horizontal and vertical variables and the time-weighted Chemin-Lerner norm introduced in [the authors, Commun. Math. Phys. 307, No. 3, 713--759 (2011; Zbl 1237.35129)]. The global well-posedness of the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system is investigated in Section 6 with only vertical viscosity, for a fluid evolving between two parallel planes.
