Let \(R\) be a noetherian ring, \(F=R^r\) a free finitely generated \(R\)-module, \(M\) a submodule of \(F.\) Let \(F_n\) be the \(n\)-th symmetric power of \(F\) and \(M_n\) the canonical image of the \(n\)-th symmetric power of \(M\) in \(F_n.\) Let \(\overline{M}_n\) be the integral closure of \(M_n\) in \(F_n\). It is known from \textit{D. Katz} and \textit{C. Naude} [Commun. Algebra 23, 4549--4555 (1995; Zbl 0846.13003)] that the sets of associated prime ideals of the modules \(F_n/M_n\) and \(F_n/\overline{M}_n\) are stable for large \(n\). Denote these stable values by \(A^*(M)\) and \(\overline{A}^*(M)\) resp. The main result of the paper is that a prime ideal \(P\) of \(R\) is in \(\overline{A}^*(M)\) if and only if \(P\) is the center of a Rees valuation. It is also shown that \(A^*(M)\subseteq\overline{A}^*(M),\) as well as other results concerning \(\overline{A}^*(M)\).
