      The authors study the existence and regularity of solutions of the problem \(u_t-\text{div}(A(x,t,u)\nabla u)=0\) in \(\Omega\times(0,T)\), \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\times(0,T)\), \(u(\cdot,0)=u_0\) in \(\Omega\), where \(\Omega\subset\mathbb R^N\) is a bounded domain with a sufficiently regular boundary \(\partial\Omega\), \(u_0\in L^m(\Omega)\), \(m\geq1\), and \(A\) is a bounded symmetric Carathéodory matrix function satisfying \[ {\alpha| \xi| ^2\over(1+| \sigma| )^\gamma} \leq \langle A(x,t,\sigma)\xi,\xi\rangle \leq {\beta| \xi| ^2\over(1+| \sigma| )^\delta}, \] where \(\alpha,\beta,\gamma>0\) and \(\delta\in\{0,\gamma\}\). In particular, they prove the existence if \(\delta=\gamma\) and either \(m>\gamma N/2\) or \(A\) depends continuously on \(x\). In the case \(\delta=0\) they assume either \(m>m_0\) (where \(m_0=m_0(\gamma,N)\geq1\)) or \(m=1\) and \(\gamma<1/N\). In some cases they also obtain estimates on the decay of solutions as \(t\to\infty\).
