The author describes the fictitious (Glowinski alternating direction method and distributed Lagrange multiplier method) and non-fictitious formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations for test problem for a backward step flow for Reynolds number \(Re=50\). The motivation here is to validate the flow behavior at and near singular point. Applying the finite element method and Marchuk-Yanenko operator splitting scheme, the author obtains a very good agreement with benchmark solutions. Further, the author observes that the numerical implementation of the fictitious method is simpler than the non-fictitious formulation to treat the fluid domain.
