A weak form of the conjecture given by \textit{H. Fang, Z. Lu} and \textit{K.-I. Yoshikawa} [J. Differ. Geom. 80, No. 2, 175--259 (2008; Zbl 1167.32016)] which says that a certain spectral string-theoretic invariant of Calabi-Yau threefolds, namely the BCOV torsion, is a birational invariant, is proved in the paper using the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem in Arakelov geometry.
